In the third quarter of 2019, the Philippines confirmed its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in Rizal Province. More than a year later, over 400,000 hogs have been culled, thousands of barangays have been infected, and at least P56 billion in losses were declared in the local hog industry due to the highly contagious disease that is ASF.
There are no medicines or vaccines available to control the disease yet. “ASF is the worst disease to hit the Philippine swine industry in recent years,” Dr. Max M. Montenegro, a swine consultant from the Philippine College of Swine Practitioners (PCSP) said during a media briefing.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 11) The Department of Agriculture has rolled out locally-developed rapid test kits that would detect the African Swine Fever.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar on Thursday visited Batangas City to turn over 100 rapid test kits to local piggery owners to check if their hogs are infected.
Scientists from the Central Luzon State University led by Dr. Clarissa Domingo developed the ASFV Nanogold Biosensor kits. If efficacy is high, then this will be given to all local government units all over the country, Dar said.
Around 500 African Swine Fever (ASF) test kits called "ASFV Nanogold Biosensor” are expected to be delivered to the province of Batangas “for wider testing and initial distribution,” the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has bared.
