Diss and Long Stratton leisure centre staff scrub-up to volunteer at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to help with Covid battle

Staff at Diss and Long Stratton leisure centres have joined the front line in the battle against coronavirus by volunteering at a nearby hospital.
In a big departure from personal training and Zumba classes, the staff have been redeployed to vaccination wards at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital to help support the Governmentâs efforts to vaccinate a nation.
Around 20 fitness instructors, lifeguards, receptionists and other staff have found themselves working 40-hour weeks at the hospital, ushering around patients as they receive their jab. ....

At the peak, the hospital was treating 351 Covid patients, including 38 people from out of area - this is the equivalent of 40pc of the hospital s total adult beds in use for Covid patients.
The operating officer told the board that while general beds were starting to become freer, patient numbers in critical care have remained static for some time - around 50 - and the workforce was still beyond stretched .
The board also heard that this time around patients are requiring longer stays in hospital, with more than 100 Covid patients having been in the hospital for 14 days or more.

A budding artist who is using her skills to create badges for a hospital charity has said the project is helping her through lockdown.
Bethany-Kate McKenzie, 14, from West End in Costessey, is making the individually wrapped pieces from a £63 badge maker she bought with her Christmas money for the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals (NNUH) Charity.

Nurse: Dad died in 'appalling conditions' on NNUH Covid ward

A nurse has spoken of her heartbreak after the death of her father.

The huge pressure being placed on overstretched staff at a hospital coronavirus ward has been highlighted by a nurse who has described the heartbreaking final hours of her father s life.
The nurse, who worked at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) for 30 years, asked not to be identified as she is still in the profession, but said she was appalled by the conditions on the wards.
The hospital said it was sorry to hear of her concerns. A spokesman said it was under extreme pressure . There are more than 300 patients being treated at the NNUH and it launched an appeal for staff and volunteers to help it last week. ....
