Becker College announced early last week that it will close its doors as of Aug. 31, 2021, citing the “impact of COVID-19, declining enrollment, rising costs and an insufficient endowment,” according to a Frequently Asked Questions page established by the college. The college on Friday declined to answer questions beyond what is posted on their website. But each year, the college releases an Institutional Profile detailing basic information about the school, its students and faculty, tuition costs, and more. Telegram & Gazette WORCESTER Becker College, whose origins date to the late 1700s, will close at the end of the academic year. The school last month made it clear that its future was in doubt, owing to financial struggles caused in large part by the pandemic. On Monday, Christine Cassidy, chairwoman of the Board of Trustees, confirmed what students and neighbors of its campuses in Worcester and Leicester had hoped to avoid. In a post on the Becker College website, she wrote: It is with deep regret that I share the news that on March 28, the Board of Trustees voted to permanently close Becker College at the end of the current academic year. Santiago and other state education officials testified Tuesday before legislative budget-writers. Ways and Means Committee member Sen. Anne Gobi, a Spencer Democrat who co-chairs the Higher Education Committee, asked Santiago about the potential closure of Becker College, which she said is the subject of a lot of concern, especially from people in the Worcester and Leicester communities, for the students, for the staff, and for the ancillary staff that are involved. ....
Becker College, mired in financial problems that could put its long-term future at risk, is moving ahead with what could be any college s biggest annual event: its spring graduation ceremony. But the Worcester school is also making contingency plans for students potentially having to transfer elsewhere if the college were to close, including helping students transfer to other institutions, according to messages to the campus community from President Nancy Crimmin. Crimmin has advised students to continue to take classes this semester and seek help from campus services if needed. The college said March 2 it was considering options for its future, including potentially closing, after talks with an unnamed institution fell apart in January. ....
