James Rogan, the new series will focus on three important events all taking place in the year 1981: the January 1981 New Cross Fire, a fire at a party in the South London suburb that killed 13 young people; the Black People’s Day of Action two months later, the first organised protest by Black Britons, with 20,000 people flooding the streets; and the April Brixton riots, also known as the Brixton uprising, a confrontation between Metropolitan police and protesters that would live long in the cultural memory. After the global success of “Small Axe,” the BBC and acclaimed British filmmaker Steve McQueen are teaming again for documentary series “Uprising.”
The three-part series will explore three seminal events of 1981 that changed race relations in the U.K. and defined them for a generation. In January 1981, a fire at a party in the London suburb of New Cross killed 13 Black teenagers. In March, more than 20,000 people joined Black People’s Day of Action, the first organized protest by Black Britons. And April was when the Brixton riots took place. ....

UK pubcaster BBC1 has ordered a factual series examining three significant events involving black British people in 1981, with Small Axe and 12 Years a Slave filmmaker Steve McQueen directing.

Uprising (3×60’) series examines the New Cross Fire in January 1981, which killed 13 black teenagers; the Black People’s Day of Action in March, when more than 20,000 people joined the first organised mass protest by black British people; and the Brixton riots in April.
With James Rogan (Stephen: The Murder that Changed a Nation) also directing, Uprising will reveal how these three events intertwined and how, in the process, race relations were defined for a generation. ....
