BANGKOK, May 28 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Forced to quarantine at his factory as COVID-19 cases surge in Thailand, migrant worker Hein Thet Zaw has spent the last 10 days sleeping in a tent, trying to ward off hunger with meager supplies of rice and boiled eggs.
Burmese workers eat a lot of rice, but what we get here is a small meal box, which isn t enough for us, Hein Thet Zaw said by phone from the factory in the central province of Phetchaburi, which makes electronic components. ....

Thai airport workers stage protest over labour conditions

BANGKOK, March 10 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Hundreds of airport workers held a demonstration in the Thai capital Bangkok on Wednesday to dispute changes to their contracts that they say strips them of basic labour rights and has led to forced resignations and arbitrary dismissals.
The protest involved at least 200 workers for AOT Aviation Security (AOT AVSEC), a joint venture set up last year between state-owned Airports of Thailand (AOT) and three security firms, with unions saying conditions had worsened during the pandemic.
The demonstration came six months after the Thomson Reuters Foundation revealed that 10 workers at Suvarnabhumi Airport were suing ASM Security Management (ASM), saying they were pressured to quit then sign new contracts on worse terms with AOT AVSEC. ....

PHNOM PENH, Feb 26 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - For the past two weeks, Cambodian migrant Mony Sunret has been hanging around an electrical workshop in the Thai province of Rayong, hoping to pick up odd jobs and save enough money to make a covert exit from Thailand.
Sunret, who recently returned to Thailand after leaving due to coronavirus restrictions last March, decided to flee once again when he found out his work permit was fake - putting him at risk from a government crackdown on undocumented workers. ....
