Operational Updates
• The wave of violence that broke out across the Central African Republic (CAR) concerning the late December elections caused the displacement of over 240,000 people within CAR, while an estimated 84,000 people are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. About half of the displaced have returned in recent weeks, but over 117,000 people remain displaced inside the country. WFP is providing immediate relief to those affected.
• The increased attacks from the non-state armed groups (NSAG), is affecting the already fragile food security situation. The Central African Republic is still not emerging from the most serious crisis it has known since it became independent. France’s policy, from the colonial period until now, partly explains the endemic violence that reigns in the Central African Republic.
The Central African Republic (CAR) is a Central African state without access to the sea, with an estimated population of 4,500,000 inhabitants . It is surrounded by Cameroon to the west, Chad to the northwest, Sudan to the northeast, South Sudan to the east, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the southeast and the Republic of the Congo to the south. Agriculture represents 50% of GDP: the CAR also has many natural resources, in particular uranium, gold, diamonds and oil, which are coveted by foreign capital.

Criminal groups abducted hundreds in north west, while ethnic and regional tensions ran high in south amid farmer-herder conflict; meanwhile, tensions rose in south east between govt and Biafra secessionists. Criminal groups in Feb reportedly killed at least 112 and kidnapped over 450 people, mostly in Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto and Zamfara states (north west), but also in Niger state (Middle Belt).
