Cuyahoga County Council president proposes Election Day off for county workers instead of Juneteenth

CLEVELAND, Ohio Cuyahoga County Council President Pernel Jones Jr. on Tuesday proposed county workers receive a paid holiday off for Election Day, rather than County Executive Armond Budish’s idea to make Juneteenth a paid day off.
Jones offered his idea at a meeting of council’s Human Resources, Appointments and Equity Committee, which took no action on the Juneteenth proposal in order to give more consideration to the Election Day suggestion and other alternatives to Budish’s plan.
“[We] have the opportunity do something that is a direct result of our liberties that Juneteenth provided for us,” Jones said. “[Employees would] have the opportunity to exercise the very freedom that Juneteenth echoes for us: the ability to go out and cast a vote.” ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A Cuyahoga County Council member and a council staffer on Monday publicly questioned why County Executive Armond Budish intended to sign 176,000 letters that the county is sending to seniors about accessing vaccines for the coronavirus.
Councilwoman Nan Baker and council staffer Trevor McAleer suggested at a Board of Control meeting that the letters should be signed by county health officials rather than Budish, noting that the independent Board of Health – not the Budish administration – is overseeing the vaccinations. ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cuyahoga County Council flexed its seldom-used oversight muscles in 2020 by calling into question the accuracy of County Executive Armond Budish’s projected revenue losses resulting from the coronavirus pandemic
But a vocal council majority also signed on with the Budish administration in support of no-bid contracts, a move sharply criticized by Ohio Common Cause, a government watchdog, for opening the procurement process to possible political influence.
