Residents of Nallur Vayal, a scenic village on the outskirts of Coimbatore are up in arms against their village being referred to as Karunya Nagar, in reference to a notorious Christian evangelist group s presence in the locality.
The Hindu s reporter cited one M Devarajan, head of Nallur Vayal Pathugappu Kuzhu (Nallur Vayal Protection Group), as saying that government records and institutions such as the police, banks, post offices had begun referring to the area as Karunya Nagar.

They submit petition at the weekly grievances redress meeting Residents of Nallur Vayal, a village in Madhvarayapuram panchayat, petitioned the Coimbatore district administration at the weekly grievances redress meeting on Monday opposing the area being referred to as Karunya Nagar.
M. Devarajan, who heads the Nallur Vayal Pathugappu Kuzhu, said be it the police, nationalised banks, post office or the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, all Central and State government establishments referred to the area as Karunya Nagar. The post office using Karunya Nagar to refer to Nallur Vayal had led to a situation where their voter identity card, ration card and other government documents showed them to be residents of the Nagar and not Nallur Vayal. Coimbatore: Residents around Karunya University on Siruvani Road staged a protest on Wednesday demanding the name of the place to be made Nallur Vayal.
The residents and members of Nallur Vayal Pathukappu Amaippu said that the place was called Nallur Vayal before the university was set up.
They said that even now in several government records, the locality is being referred to as Nallur Vayal. But over years the place got to be called as Karunya Nagar, named after the university. The name boards of the post office and police station in the place also refers to the locality as Karunya Nagar.
