How Covid-19 exposes digital divide in corridors of justice


The Judiciary soon went digital, and remote court proceedings became a reality in a bid to ensure the justice system is not crippled.
Proceedings on Zoom became the order of the day, as the elderly and children aged below 13 years were banned from accessing courts premises.
The Judiciary also introduced an email filing system for civil cases.

Two groups battle over 100-acre land in Njoro


Through lawyer Kipkoech Terer, the members want Justice John Mutungi to issue fresh eviction orders against members and trustees of the Njoro Golf Club Squatters’ Self-help Group.
In the application filed on Wednesday, the association urged the court to order that the eviction decree be effected by auctioneers, with the assistance of the Njoro Sub-County police commander who should give the Rift Valley regional commander a seven-day notice.
In the alternative, the members want the court to issue a notice stating why eviction orders should not be issued against the trustees of the squatters’ group. They also want the squatters to shoulder the costs of the application. ....

Magistrate found dead


THE STANDARD
A Chief Magistrate has been found dead in a house in Nairobi.
Godfrey Hillary Oduor is said to have moved into the house where he lived with a woman, sometime in September.
The woman is reported to have returned from work on Wednesday evening and found the house locked from inside. On trying to look through the bedroom window, she saw Oduor seemingly asleep but with foam in his mouth.
Police officers from Makadara station arrived at the scene and found the door closed from inside. When they broke in, they found the magistrate dead.
The body that had no visible injuries was moved to City Mortuary pending investigations. ....
