Forest cover increases by 1,049 hectares in Coimbatore division | Coimbatore News

COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore forest division has become bigger by 1,049.74 hectares, with district collector S Nagarajan declaring the parcels of revenue department land abutting the reserve forest in Mettupalayam, Anaimalai and Pollachi taluks as the reserve land. With this, the forest cover in the Coimbatore division has increased to 1,23,264.87 hectares from 1,22,215.13 hectares.
Forest minister K Ramachandran has appreciated the collector and forest officials for increasing the forest cover in the division to protect the passage of wild animals.
Earlier, district forest officer (DFO) D Venkatesh and team had collected details of the revenue department land adjacent to the reserve forest at Kemmampalayam, Karamadai, Tholampalayam and Maruthur in Mettupalayam taluk, Odayakulam in Anaimalai taluk, and Zamin Uthukuli in Pollachi taluk and submitted the same before the district collector a few days ago with a request to declare them as the reserve l ....

Ambulance catches fire at Coimbatore govt hospital | Coimbatore News

Initial probe suggests that a leak in the oxygen cylinder aggrevated the blaze.
COIMBATORE: An 108 ambulance vehicle that was parked at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) caught fire at 11.10am on Saturday.
A source in the hospital said that the fire broke out due to a short circuit inside the vehicle.
Stating that no casualties were reported, the source said that a leak in the oxygen cylinder in the ambulance aggravated the fire.
An official at CMCH said that the fire broke out when the staff were changing the patient s oxygen cylinder. The ambulance staff immediately pulled out the patient, he added. ....

Coimbatore viral deaths, cremations don't match | Coimbatore News

Till date, Coimbatore has recorded 733 Covid deaths and 84,206 virus cases (Photo for representative purpose only)
COIMBATORE: There seems to be a mismatch in the number of Covid-19 deaths declared by the state government and the number of bodies cremated or buried as per the Covid-19 protocol in Coimbatore district.
According to government’s media bulletin, the number of people who died due to the infection between April 26 and May1 in the district was13. But the number of people cremated/buried in Coimbatore city as per Covid-19 protocol for the same period was more than 210.
People who died of coronavirus within the city limits were cremated at four places –Athupalam, Nanjundapuram, Kavundampalayam and Chokkampudur and buried at multiple burial grounds including the ones at Selvapuram, Poo Market, Podanur, Kovaipudur and Sugunapuram. ....
