Remembering Raviraj 17 years on | Tamil Guardian

Today marks 17 years since Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP and human rights lawyer, Nadarajah Raviraj was assassinated in Colombo. Raviraj was shot in Colombo at close range by unidentified gunmen on a motorbike at around 8:30am on November 10 2006, as he got into his car after giving an interview. The MP died later in hospital. His bodyguard was also killed. ....

Commissions of Inquiry: Grave Threat to Democracy and Judicial Independence


Several initiatives have already been taken to implement the recommendations of the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into political victimization (the CoI) including the obtaining of Cabinet approval, the establishment of a Special Commission of Inquiry and a resolution tabled in Parliament. While Commissions of Inquiry have played a recurring role in distracting attention away from established mechanisms for justice and accountability in the past, the haste with which the recommendations of the present Commission are intended to be implemented is a cause for concern and may have grave implications for the independence of the judiciary, the rule of law and democracy in Sri Lanka. ....

Eran in Parliament: Govt. usurps judicial power to decide the merits and demerits of the court cases


The Commission of Inquiry on political victimization was appointed in January 2020 and the report to President was given in December 2020. Thereafter  Cabinet approval was obtained and another special Presidential Commission of Inquiry was appointed. Furthermore, we saw on the 09
th of April a resolution brought to Parliament stating that things that should be acted upon were in the commission of inquiry report item no 8, 9 and 10. No 8 has now devolved on the special presidential commission of inquiry. Exempting that, everything in no 9 and no 10 should be acted upon after the resolution is passed in parliament.
