Coronavirus impact: Rajasthan govt declares black fungus as epidemic


Mucormycosis (black fungus), which is primarily affecting people recovering from COVID, has been declared an epidemic in Rajasthan, officials said on Wednesday.
Currently, the state has around 100 black fungus patients and a separate ward has been made at Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital in Jaipur for their treatment.
Mucormycosis has been notified as an epidemic and a notifiable disease in the state under the Rajasthan Epidemic Act 2020, according to a notification issued by state s Principal Health Secretary Akhil Arora.
He said the step was taken to ensure integrated and coordinated treatment of black fungus and the coronavirus.
According to experts, people with diabetes are more prone to getting the black fungus infection. ....

Govt engaging with drug makers to ramp up production of anti-fungal drug


The government is engaging with the drug manufacturers to ramp up the production of an antifungal drug used for the treatment of mucormycosis, the Chemicals and Fertilizers Ministry said, as a rash of cases of rare black fungus infection have been reported among people either recovered or recovering from COVID-19.
With a spike in the cases of COVID-19 in the country, doctors have been reporting a rare infection mucormycosis, also called as black fungus, among people recovered from COVID-19. The infection is caused by exposure to mucor mould and it affects the sinuses, the brain and the lungs and can be life-threatening. ....

Combo Therapy Boosts Response in Uncontrolled Gout

The addition of an immunomodulating agent to pegloticase (Krystexxa) among patients with uncontrolled gout significantly improved response rates, a systematic literature review found.
In a cohort of patients whose gout had been refractory to conventional therapy, co-treatment with pegloticase plus an immunomodulator was associated with an overall response rate of 82.9%, reported Robert T. Keenan, MD, of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues.
That rate was markedly higher than the 42% that had been observed for pegloticase monotherapy in clinical trials, Keenan and co-authors noted in their study online in
