Every so often, amid the depressing data on hospitalization and deaths from COVID-19, a story breaks out that offers a glimpse of hope.
In early December 2020, a 10-day coding boot camp , organized by the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the International Telecommunication Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together over 2,000 young girls from around Africa.
The girls, drawn from various socio-economic backgrounds, learned computer programming, Internet of Things, Turtle Stitch, AI, web development and a fine dose of human rights and entrepreneurship, among others. Most of the training took place virtually.
