Mwalimu Humphreys Ouma waits patiently for two wooden canoes ferrying his pupils to manoeuvre a stretch of murky waters to the doorstep of a classroom. He waits to help them disembark to attend classes.
This has been the routine for the last year, since the back-flow of waters from Lake Victoria and floods engulfed part of Musoma Primary School, where he is the headteacher.
The boat takes five minutes navigating the 100m stretch to the classrooms, carrying 10 to 15 pupils per trip in the flood-hit Bunyala of Budalang’i Sub-County, some 60km from Busia town. ....

Mud walled classrooms at Pan Paper Primary School in Lugari collapsed recently leaving 780 learners without a place to study. [Standard]
Bad weather, teacher shortage and challenges in enforcing social distancing are among teething problems schools are grappling with two weeks after learners resumed classes.
Since the end of last week, most areas in North Rift are witnessing short rains and chilly weather that have made it hard to conduct lessons out of classrooms as recommended by the Education Ministry as part of measures to curb Covid-19 infection risks.
Some teachers who spoke on condition of anonymity said classrooms are congested but due to the prevailing cold and wet conditions, it would be unhealthy to expose children by having lessons under trees. ....
