Muskoka tourism industry thriving in Step 3

GRAVENHURST, ONT.
When the clock stuck at 12:01 a.m. last Friday, entering Step 3 of the province s reopening plan, it gave the tourism industry in Gravenhurst a much-needed boost.
Since then, Muskoka Steamships has doubled capacity on its steamships from 54 people, which was the limit in Step 2, to 108.
We started out the year with 25 percent of our capacity, so we up to 50, says John Miller with the Muskoka Steamships. Our hope is maybe that by late August, September time period we ll perhaps go up to 75 percent or even 100 percent.
While one of the oldest steamships in the country, the Segwun, will remain docked for another year, its sister ship, the Wenonah II, will do all the work. ....

COVID-19 News: 'It's just too hard to predict what's going to happen' Muskoka businesses prep for tourism season

GRAVENHURST, ONT.
The Ontario government pulled the emergency brake putting the province in a shutdown effective Saturday after surging COVID cases - a move that sent a shockwave through the business community in Muskoka.
Retailers say mixed messages from the province make matters worse. We constantly hearing the words lockdown and shutdown, and yet the framework has changed and retailers, like myself, are open at 25 per cent capacity, says Judy Terry, Muskoka Bay Clothing.
While plans are underway for the tourism season, the president of Muskoka Steamships says one of the region s most iconic tourist attractions, the Segwun, will stay parked. It s just too hard to predict what s going to happen this summer with the restrictions and with occupancy and distancing required, John Miller says. The Segwun just doesn t become viable once we reduce her passenger counts. ....

While some were disappointed to find out Gravenhurst’s Winter Carnival would be cancelled, Andrey Petrov and Caroline Petrova decided they would take the festival to their front yard on Hotchkiss Street in Gravenhurst.
Petrova tells the MyMuskokaNow.com newsroom they usually carve a sculpture at the carnival. “We decided we would build something with a bit of local interest in our front yard,” she says. That’s when she and Petrov decided to create the RMS Segwun.
According to the Muskoka Steamships and Discovery Centre, the Segwun is North America’s oldest operating mail steamship at 134 years. When the ship was in its heyday, it needed 250 tons of coal to last its four and a half month sailing season, according to the centre. “Her ability to adapt to 130 years of changes is a model to us all, as North America’s oldest operating hand-fired steamship, the RMS Segwun is the ....
