Illuminated sculpture gives Muskegon beach-goers colorful scene amid picturesque sunsets

MUSKEGON, MI – Blue and green glass rings illuminated with LED lighting greet beach-goers to Muskegon’s Pere Marquette Park as part of a recently installed abstract sculpture.
The illuminated sculpture is visually interesting, especially at night with Lake Michigan, the beach and potentially a sunset as the backdrop.
The 22-foot-tall sculpture “Celebrating Muskegon” is the third commission from the Muskegon City Public Art Initiative (MCPAI), a community-driven effort that aims to bring 10 works of art to the area.
The sculpture was installed at the roundabout at Beach Street and Lakeshore Drive. ....

Two parks hit improvement jackpot after Muskegon beach plans fall through

MUSKEGON, MI – Two Muskegon parks unexpectedly won the jackpot recently when plans for more parking and a wider sidewalk at Muskegon’s beach fell apart.
C.J. Reese Playfield and Beukema Park are expected to get an estimated $900,000 in improvements within the next year that will be paid with money originally intended for improvements at the beach.
After the city ran into timing snags and citizen opposition to the beach plans, commissioners recently agreed to invest in parks that serve children and families where they live.
Neither Reese nor Beukema were at the top of a priority list for improvements that was prepared in 2019. But they were chosen because they are on the east side of the city and improvements there can be achieved rather quickly. ....

Pere Marquette beach in Muskegon will get additional trees, but no more parking or a wider sidewalk, at least for now, the city commission decided on April 27, 2021. MUSKEGON, MI – Muskegon’s Pere Marquette beach will get new trees, but no additional parking or a wider sidewalk anytime soon.
City staff will research the biggest trees that are appropriate for the beach – ones that could replace a tree “canopy” that has slowly dwindled over the years. But what happens to 11 existing trees that were slated for removal remains to be seen. ....

MUSKEGON, MI – An abstract sculpture featuring blue and green glass rings atop steel beams now greets visitors to Muskegon’s Pere Marquette Park.
“Celebrating Muskegon” was installed this week at the center of the roundabout at Beach Street and Lakeshore Drive.
The 22-foot sculpture is the third commission from the MuskegonCity Public Art Initiative (MCPAI) a community-driven effort that aims to bring 10 works of art to the area.
“I think this will be a wonderful thing for our visitors to see and a wonderful moment of delight for them,” MCPAI director Judy Hayner said ....
