One of the biggest scandals in the history of Israeli museums has reached an unexpected happy ending. The attempt to sell some of the best artifacts of the L. A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art in Jerusalem ended with an international compromise supervised by the High Court of Justice.
The splendid collection was made possible by a donation from the late Vera Salomons, who dreamed back in the ‘60s of bringing Jews and Muslims closer through art. Hundreds of incredibly beautiful and important pieces from the collection were at stake. Salomons established the museum and left specific instructions on how to run it, but those who pretended to speak in her name – an unknown foundation from Lichtenstein, with Israeli and Swiss trustees running it – tried to sell a hefty chunk of the collection to the highest bidder. ....

A Qatari foundation belonging to the ruling Al Thani family has intervened in an ongoing dispute over the sale of 268 rare Islamic artefacts and rescued the items from being removed permanently from their current home in the Museum for Islamic Art in Jerusalem.
The rare Islamic artefacts were expected to be sold by Sotheby s auction house in London last October. They include 194 items of Islamic art and 74 timepieces and music boxes from the museum s collection. In total, the items constitute about five per cent of the entire collection of the Museum of Islamic Art in Jerusalem. ....

Israel’s premier museum for Islamic art has scrapped the planned auction of scores of rare and precious items after public outcry over the attempted sale, which had been expected to fetch millions of dollars from wealthy private collectors.
In a settlement struck Wednesday, the Sotheby’s auction house agreed to return 268 items from London back to the L.A. Mayer Museum for Islamic Art in Yerushalayim.
The agreement ends a saga that drew broad condemnation and threatened to gut one of Israel’s prized public art collections. Art experts criticized the attempted sale to private collectors, saying it had been hidden from the public and violated the museum’s founding mission to edify the Isra ....
