Flood Assessment Continues In Museum Fire Burn Area

Credit KNAU Coconino County officials estimate up to 700,000 sandbags have been placed throughout the area since the 2019 Museum Fire. County crews continue to work on restoring capacity to flood channels in critical areas, including Linda Vista crossing, Dortha inlet and Arroyo Seco inlet. The National Guard finished work in Mount Elden Estates and is rebuilding the unpaved portion of Fourth Street leading to the Humane Society. Despite a downturn in precipitation this week, the National Weather Service says flood risk is still possible as soil remains saturated from the monsoon. Data released this morning shows Arizona has entered the 98th percentile for soil moisture compared to the rest of the country.

Neighborhoods in east Flagstaff were primarily impacted. The rushing waters were expected as a byproduct of the burn scar from the 2019 Museum Fire. Videos shared by residents shared on social media include footage of flowing water sending a Toyota Prius sailing down a street. Flooding could continue with rain predicted through early next week.
