After Years At A Mid-Michigan College, A Mayan Artifact Returns To Its Homeland

It began eight years ago, in 2013, when Arizona State University archaeologist Joel Palka visited Albion College.
He was there to study one of the college’s photograph collections of the Mayan people who inhabited what is today known as the state of Chiapas in the southwest region of Mexico.
Walking through the halls, he saw an ancient urn featuring sculptural details of what appears to be a man wearing colorful garments.
“I passed by the urn on my way to the photograph archive. And I always thought, ‘Oh, it s an, it s an interesting urn.’ And it was made out of ceramic about three feet high,” he said.  ....

A Mayan urn used for rituals in what is now Chiapas will be returned to Mexico after spending 50 years in the U.S. The urn was found in 1969 by professor Marvin Vann, who donated it to Albion College in 2003. In 2009, negotiations began for the urn to be repatriated to Mexico.
Representatives of Albion College and officials from the Mexican Consulate in Detroit signed the agreement for repatriation this week. The urn will be in Mexico in a matter of days, according to Elizabeth Palmer, head of the Albion College archives. It will be on display with its twin at the Museo de los Altos in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas. ....

ALBION, MI – Albion College returned a 500-year-old Mayan urn to the government of Mexico in a repatriation ceremony on April 13.
The urn, created by the Lacandon Maya in the Chiapas region in 1525, was donated to the college in 2003 as part of a collection of papers, photographs and artifacts from alumnus Marvin Vann, class of 1940, according to a college news release. Vann spent years in Mexico on a personal mission to study communities of indigenous people in remote areas, according to the release. ....

US college returns Mayan urn to Mexico
A Mayan urn, made between 900 and 1600 AD, is returning to Mexico after spending more than 50 years at a college in the United States.
The urn, considered to be of high historical value, has been housed at Albion College, Michigan, since 1969.
The Mexican foreign ministry said the urn would now be taken to the Museo de los Altos in Chiapas.
The artefact will be displayed alongside a twin urn that is on show at the museum.
The recovery of this Mayan urn and reunification with its twin artefact represent an act of great importance for Mexico and its historical heritage, the ministry said in a statement. ....
