Attorneys weigh in on hired killer s bid for new trial

MUNCIE, Ind. Attorneys have weighed in as a Delaware County man convicted in a murder-for-hire plot continues his pursuit of a new trial.
Jess David Woods, now 69, was convicted of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in 2009. He was later sentenced to 100 years in prison by Delaware Circuit Court 3 Judge Linda Ralu Wolf.
Woods formerly of the Daleville area was convicted of fatally shooting 29-year-old Teresa French at her family s Cromer Avenue home in May 1993.
Authorities said French s estranged husband, Anthony, had hired Woods to kill her.
At a hearing last November, Woods and his attorney, Eric Koselke of Indianapolis, requested post-conviction relief in the form of a new trial.
Suspect in Fort Wayne homicide arrested in Muncie
MUNCIE, Ind. A suspect in an Allen County homicide was apprehended in Muncie on Thursday night.
Terry Smith Jr., 34, of Bluffton, was captured by Fort Wayne police detectives, who were accompanied by Muncie officers and Indiana State Police.
Smith was returned to Fort Wayne, where he was being held without bond in the Allen County jail on Saturday.
On Friday, he was preliminarily charged with murder in Allen Superior Court 4.
Police allege Smith killed Tiffany I. Ferris, 34, of Decatur, last Sunday night in a motel room along Coliseum Boulevard in Fort Wayne.

MUNCIE, Ind. A Muncie resident was arrested Wednesday in the wake of another man’s fatal drug overdose.
Donovan Joseph Hudson, 23, was taken into custody as he allegedly tried to flee from the scene of the overdose, in the 2300 block of South Penn Street, where a 24-year-old local man had died.
Authorities said Hudson was found “attempting to leave with a basket containing a safe and other items.”
He was also reportedly found to be carrying two syringes, containing a “liquid substance,” and more than 500 blue tablets of what was believed to be a controlled substance.
“Those syringes aren’t mine,” Hudson reportedly told officers. “I took them off those guys at the house. One is from the guy who died.”
Police: Muncie man offered officer $50 bribe
That effort resulted in a preliminary bribery charge against 21-year-old Dylan James Moody.
Authorities said they found Moody, of the 1700 block of South Blaine Street, in a fenced-in lot at JNR Trucking, 4500 N. Madison St., about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday.
A caller had reported a man later identified as Moody had entered an employee s vehicle, then was arguing with employees and refusing to leave.
The Muncie man also is accused of damaging a door when he tried to enter a building at GW Pierce Auto Parts, 4416 S. Madison.
