Vow to resist move to disenfranchise medical community By Chioma Obinna The Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, and its affiliates on Thursday demanded the application of merit and extant laws in the selection of the Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, vowing to resist any move to disenfranchise any qualified person including medical doctors with fellowship through lawful and legal means.
The medical doctors, however, appealed to the State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu to immediately announce any of the three finalists in the second selection process as the ninth Vice-Chancellor of the University.
It could be recalled that following the Lagos State Governor had ordered fresh selection for final selection of the Vice-Chancellor of LASU following petitions from some people within the University. ....

How clashes between Customs, smugglers claim lives in border communities


While the officials are saddled with the responsibility of protecting the borders from infiltration of contraband goods, arms and illicit drugs, smugglers device various methods of going against the law.
Apart from killing the alleged smugglers, Customs officials and innocent citizens are also losing their lives during altercations at border communities.
Besides gun battles with the smugglers, findings by
Daily Trust Saturday showed that excessive speeding by the security agents while going after the suspected smugglers contribute to the casualties being recorded.
Sources said that in 2020, at least two Customs officers were either killed or injured every month, while innocent citizens were hit by stray bullets. ....

Tragedy struck in Asu village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Wednesday when an operational vehicle of the operatives of the  Nigeria Customs Service crushed a motorcyclist, Juwon Mumuni, to death.
Our correspondent gathered that the operatives of the Federal Operating Unit of NCS were involved in the fatal incident.
It was gathered that the men of the FOU were chasing some suspected rice smugglers when their vehicle crushed the 35-year-old Mumuni, a lotto operator.
A lawyer, Ganiyu kusanwo, who spoke with our correspondent  on behalf of the deceased’s family, said, “Juwon was going to the main road on his motorcycle, which he uses as another source of income. ....

Customs officers allegedly kill motorcyclist in Ogun
The deceased was standing at Asu village junction before the custom vehicle lost control, crushing him.

A motorcyclist in Ogun State, Juwon Mumuni, was reportedly crushed to death during an encounter between operatives of the
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that the incident occurred in Asu village, Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of the state.
Mr Mumuni was killed by an operational vehicle of the operatives of the NCS while they were chasing some suspected rice smugglers.
Sources who witnessed the incident told our correspondent that the deceased was standing at Asu village junction before the custom vehicle lost control, crushing him. ....
