menendez. russia is gearing up to launch more aggressive attacks and is on the verge of its first big victory. mariupol is on the brink of falling. earlier today president volodymyr zelenskyy called the situation very difficult, saying it s, quote, clear things in mariupol won t get better. russia gave the remaining ukrainian soldiers an ultimatum to surrender, but the deadline for that has passed. ukraine s prime minister says they have no plans of backing down. the city still has not fallen. there is still our military forces, our soldiers, so they will fight. as for now, they still are in mariupol. this victory for russia would come on the heels of major losses including ukrainian forces taking out the flagship warship in russia s fleet and the death of a russian military general. russia retaliated by parts of western ukraine near the capital city of kyiv despite previously withdrawing troops from those areas. nbc news correspondent ali arouzi joins me from lviv. ali,
