Kashmir s Vulnerability to Floods Exposed: NIDM Report Highlights Urgent Corrective Measures

A report by the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) highlights the urgent need for corrective measures to prevent future floods in Kashmir similar to the devastating 2014 flood. The report identifies unplanned development, including unregulated mining and poorly-planned urbanisation, as detrimental factors. It warns of dire consequences if immediate action is not taken, calling for measures such as constructing flood channels, enhancing urban drainage systems, and restoring natural drainage and wetlands. The report also examines the history and causes of floods in the region and documents the recovery efforts after the 2014 flood. It emphasises the importance of disaster preparedness and proactive measures to minimise the impact of natural disasters in the vulnerable region.
