Sara Simmerman had no time to waste when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on a Thursday night last March that schools throughout the state were shutting down. The food and nutrition supervisor for the Huron Valley School District and her staff had hundreds of kids who needed to be fed. Simmerman and her staff sprang into action, never missing a beat. The cafeteria was closed to kids, but the work behind the scenes continued and meals were distributed that Monday. “We never quit serving meals,” Simmerman said. “I knew we were going to feed them… We had a sense this would happen it was becoming such an issue. People weren’t on the streets and there were food shortages and all of a sudden people were not working. I am a planning the worst-case scenario type person, problem solve for the worst, and we were ready somewhat.” ....
