A hundred East Jerusalem residents have been working for years as street cleaners in Modi’in. There had never been any friction or conflict between them and the city’s residents. Every day they would leave Shoafat, go through two checkpoints to arrive at 5:30 A.M. in the Israeli city, collect garbage until the afternoon, and go home. Modi’in residents are pleased with how their city looks, and would at times send messages to the municipality complimenting the cleaners’ work. 
On Tuesday, as a result of the strike called by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee in Israel to protest the situation in Gaza, Jerusalem, and the country’s mixed cities, the longtime cleaners did not come to work. In the evening, other Arab workers came to the city to clean the streets.  ....

Thousands marched to protest violence, police inaction in Arab Israeli community

More than ten thousand people marched to protest against rising crime and violence in the Arab community in Israel on Saturday afternoon in Tamra, in the Galilee.
The city, home to around 35,000 people, was the setting of a police shootout with criminals on February 1, in which two innocent bystanders were shot. Ahmad Hijazi, a 20-year-old nursing student, later died of his wounds.

Protesters also denounced police incompetence to tackle crime in the Arab community. This is the latest in a string of protests that has brought together people from Tamra and neighboring towns since the incident, with the prominent presence of young people.  ....

About 100 people took to the streets of Umm al-Fahm in protest after the shooting. Police said the protesters marched from the main square at the entrance to the city and held prayers on the main highway, road 65, blocking the road for a short time. The police said that protesters threw stones and bottles at officers who used forceful means to disperse them when the prayer ended. Four protesters were arrested.
The Umm al-Fahm municipality declared a three-day mourning period and a general strike on Sunday. Mayor Samir Mahameed announced that he would resign in a month if Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu did not introduce a plan for fighting crime in Arab society. Mahameed said that he would send his resignation letter on Sunday dated one month from now. ....
