Sudan, which has descended into chaos with fierce fighting between rival generals, has lived through multiple civil wars since winning independence from Britain and Egypt in 1956
Sudan has been without a functioning government since October 2021, when the military dismissed PM Abdalla Hamdok s transitional administration and proclaimed a state of emergency in what political opponents referred to as a coup
Hours after an internationally mediated ceasefire was supposed to go into effect, fighting in Sudan resumed as soldiers loyal to opposing generals fought over vital locations in the city and accused one another of violating the ceasefire
Residents have been pleading for a temporary ceasefire so they can stock up on supplies or relocate to safer areas. According to media reports, the two sides agreed to a 24-hour truce on Tuesday, but fighting continued in parts of the city
The violence erupted on Saturday between the forces of two generals who seized power in a 2021 coup: army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.
