Prof Ndulu was a giant in the field, say experts

​​​​​​​THE death at the age of 71 of former Bank of Tanzania (BoT) governor Prof Benno Ndulu as he underwent treatment at the Hubert Kairuki Hospital in Dar es Salaam has shocked a legion of experts in the banking community and economic research regionally and abroad.

BUSINESS Tanzania has lost former Central Bank Governor Benno Ndulu who died on Monday, according to the East African publication. Quoting his personal assistant Msafiri Nampesya, to the weekly publication reported that the ex-governor was admitted for more than 10 days before he died. Benno Ndulu was born on January 23, 1950 and was appointed to the position on 8, 2008. Key Facts: Ndulu was appointed central bank governor after the sacking of his predecessor, Daudi Ballali, in 2008 following widespread graft allegations at the institution. He worked to rebuild public trust and confidence in Tanzania’s central bank. He presided over strong economic growth averaging 7 per cent a year while bringing down the annual inflation rate to single-digit levels from a peak of 20 per cent in December 2011.

Former Bank of Tanzania governor Benno Ndulu dies aged 71

The East African Monday February 22 2021 Summary Advertisement Benno Ndulu, the former governor of Tanzania’s Central Bank, died on Monday while receiving treatment at Hubert Kairuki Memorial Hospital in Dar es Salaam.  Prof Ndulu, 71, was admitted for more than 10 days before he died, his personal assistant Msafiri Nampesya said. Funeral arrangements are taking place at his Mbweni residence in Dar es Salaam, he added.  Prof Ndulu was born in January 23, 1950. He was started his career at the University of Dar es Salaam in the early 1980s before joining the World Bank as a Lead Economist. He is best known for his involvement in setting up and developing one of the most effective research and training networks in Africa, the African Economic Research Consortium.
