HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - The first group of professionals have been chosen for a controversial program that would bring people from across the nation to Hawaii to work remotely.
Nearly 90,000 people from across the U.S. applied to be a part of the Movers and Shakas Program, which offers them a free trip to the islands.
The program was announced in December, and the first 50 people have been selected to be part of the first cohort. Organizers of the program say of the first 50, more than half are returning kamaâaina.

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hawaii businesses say they are adapting to a crowd of mainlanders who spend weeks in the state on a âworkcation.â
Fannie Cline, the principal broker at Realty Group Hawaii, said they are seeing many folks looking for furnished rentals they can stay at for a few months while they work.
âThere is a huge demand,â Cline said. âThe majority of what weâre seeing is tech individuals who are able to work remotely. Many of the people weâre speaking with are families. Their kids are being homeschooled anyway, and itâs an easy transition.â
