live here, what drew him to do what he did this morning. what stands out to you as a journlist this sry? i think it s that a this point, the motive isn t clear and we don t know if there is you know, if he left a note, if there are clear signs about what would drive him to this and in past in some of the most recent church shootings, you know, there seems to have been a racial undertone and that doesn t appear to be the case here. so it s trying to understand why someone would fire on the outside of a church, walked inside and killed a lot of people ages 5 to 72. a lot of very young children here. what would drive somebody to do that. andrea, they have been asked the question, its relationship,

a motive isn t yet clear but according to a justice department official close to the investigation, federal investigators may have gathered enough evidence to suspect the accused driver wanted to send a message. it doesn t meet the definition of domestic terrorism in our statute, and if it does you can be sure we will charge and advance the investigation toward the most serious charges that can be brought because this is an unequivocally, unacceptable and evil attack that cannot be accepted in america. reporter: and according to a justice department source, investigators are looking into whether fields may not have acted alone. the thing that they will look at is not just who was driving the car but who was helping that person, who was an accomplice to this. it will be a wide scope investigation, as it should be. reporter: even though he said he could not afford a lawyer, the judge said that james field could not be appointed a public defender because, according to the judge, s
murdered did take steps acting together to conceal both her death and to avoid prosecution. a very emotional case for a lot of people here in this area. people were confounded not just over the fact that this could happen to a toddler but by the fact no one could help you identify this little girl. police called her baby doe for nearly three months. she now has a name wolf bella bond. the police did not offer any motive supposedly for this death, right? reporter: that s right. they said they could not at this point offer a motive that they were willing to share. they reminded the room full of reporters here that a motive isn t required under the law but believe they have very solid evidence that this young girl was murdered by the boyfriend of her mother michael mccarthy who s been arrested. hefrs taken into custody in a hospital. we re told he was being treated for something entirely unrelated. they went onto say it was an act of violence in her home but no further details given.
