Naomi Ackerman, an Israeli actress who was commissioned by the Israeli Ministry of Welfare to write a play about domestic violence, is coming to Cincinnati from November 10–12. The pandemic exacerbated the existing crisis of domestic violence. The JWI’s (Jewish Women International) report, “Domestic Violence in the Jewish Community,” stated, “The pandemic has created heightened risks for women and families as stay-at-home orders, unemployment, financial hardship, and trauma correlate with an increase of gender-based violence.” According to Women Helping Women, one in three women and one in four men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner in their lifetime.
The Jewish Fertility Foundation (JFF) recently named Talia Smolkin their JFF-CINCY Manager. With branches located throughout the United States, the JFF provides educational awareness, financial assistance, and emotional support to Jewish families who have medical fertility challenges in the communities they serve, as well as offering programs virtually. Smolkin received a Masters in Social Work, and her background makes her a perfect fit for her new position. “My education showed me vastly different and beautiful parts of the country. I studied psychology while wandering through the redwood trees in Santa Cruz, CA, and received my Masters in New York, leaving as much time as possible for musicals.”
Fifteen years after the creation and initial funding of Jewish Cemeteries of Greater Cincinnati (JCGC), which now serves as a national model for cemetery management, the organization is launching a community-wide capital gifts campaign this month. Hank and Anita Schneider built a solid foundation for the drive with their lead gift of $1 million, called “transformational” by the campaign’s organizers. Jewish Federation of Cincinnati and the Jewish Foundation of Cincinnati have quietly made significant gifts, as have several others in our community.
