Rural Queenstown residents are up in arms over council plans to put freedom camping sites in their neighbourhood reserves.
City Hall’s investigating options to locate sites around the Whakatipu, including at White
chapel, near Arrowtown, and Morven Ferry.
But neighbours are worried there’ll be a repeat of issues seen at Lake Hayes a few years ago if they go ahead.
Queenstown council’s community services general manager Thunes Cloete says on the council’s website staff assessed all potential sites in the district, before issuing a survey to get a feel for issues before more formal consultation starts. ....

Eleven people are injured after a hot air balloon crashed near Arrowtown.
St John has confirmed to Newshub eight people have minor injuries, one person has moderate injuries, and two people have serious injuries. Police have confirmed there have been no fatalities.
Those in a serious condition are being transported by helicopter to Dunedin Hospital while the others are being taken to Lakes District Hospital by ambulance.
We have dispatched two helicopters, four ambulances, a manager in a first response vehicle and a First Response Unit to the scene, says David Baillie, St John territory manager. We have assessed and trasported 11 patients in minor to serious conditions. ....

A hot air balloon that crashed this morning near Queenstown leaving 11 people injured was seen moments earlier flying low near powerlines coming down too fast .
Emergency services rushed to the crash site at Morven Ferry Rd about 10am.
A St John spokesman said they received a 111 call from a member of the public at 9.54am.
We have dispatched two helicopters, four ambulances, a manager in a first response vehicle and a First Response Unit to the scene. ....

The hot air balloon company responsible for a crash landing near Queenstown on Friday has released details of how the accident occurred.
A spokesperson for Sunrise Balloons said on Friday afternoon the balloon was carrying experienced pilot Carrick McLellan and 10 passengers when it came into land on a private airstrip in Morven Ferry Rd.
On approach, the balloon was caught by a sudden wind gust and the basket containing passengers impacted with a low bank.
