Coalition lays groundwork for advertising campaign to spruik workplace relations overhaul


The bill, introduced to parliament just before the Christmas break, contains a raft of changes to industrial relations laws, including removing rights to backpay from misclassified casual workers and increasing the flexibility of part-time work.
The most politically contentious element is a plan to suspend the “better off overall test” for two years to allow the industrial umpire to consider the impact of Covid-19 on businesses trying to cut workers’ pay and conditions. A contract notice posted online on Friday revealed Christian Porter’s department will pay $198,000 for nearly three months of market research by Whereto Research Based Consulting. It is due to be completed by 31 March. ....

Former Coalition adviser wins $190,000 bushfire agency contract without full tender

A former senior Howard government media adviser has been awarded a $190,000 public relations contract with Australia’s bushfire recovery agency without a full tender process.
Guardian Australia can reveal Richard Forbes, who was an adviser to the former deputy prime minister and Nationals leader Mark Vaile, is being paid to produce videos documenting the recovery of communities affected by the “black summer” bushfires.
A contract notice published on the government’s AusTender website on Christmas Eve says the deal with Forbes’s company, Forbes Lowndes Pty Ltd, was reached by limited tender – rather than a full competitive tender process – because of “advantageous conditions arising only in the very short term, not routine procurements”. ....
