The first medical expert witness called by Derek Chauvin’s defense team faced difficult cross-examination on Wednesday after he testified that George Floyd died from sudden cardiac arrhythmia, rather than a deprivation of oxygen caused by Mr. Chauvin.
Dr. David Fowler, a former chief medical examiner of Maryland who has testified in numerous high-profile police use-of-force cases, told jurors that he believed Mr. Floyd died after a combination of factors including pre-existing heart conditions, drug use and exposure to vehicle exhaust from the police cruiser that he was next to caused his heart to stop. ....

Derek Chauvin trial: Pathology expert says George Floyd died from 'sudden cardiac arrhythmia'


Dr David Fowler, the former chief medical examiner of Maryland, took the stand on Wednesday morning 
He concluded that George Floyd suffered a sudden cardiac arrhythmia during his restraint by Derek Chauvin
Fowler said Floyd had an enlarged heart, which meant he needed more oxygen to function
He also suggested that Floyd could have inhaled carbon monoxide from the squad car he was pinned next to
Later Fowler said the Chauvin s knee caused no significant injury to Floyd s neck 
He argued Floyd s death should not have been ruled a homicide because there are so many competing causes
Fowler s conclusions contradicted those of other medical experts who said Floyd died from a lack of oxygen   ....
