Woman left in agony on city street due to 'unprecedented demand' on St John


Madden-Hall and her son knew the injury was serious, and rang St John for help about 2.15pm.
The 60-year-old waited in the cold, but the ambulance did not arrive, so she told her son to call again.
An ambulance did show, but went to the other side of the mall to help another person, making Madden-Hall’s agonising wait even worse.
A car ambulance finally arrived about 3.30pm – more than an hour after the incident.
Madden-Hall said the paramedic told her she had a severe sprain and should go to Moorhouse Medical Centre to be X-rayed. The paramedic could not take her because their vehicle was a non-transportable, non-ambulance vehicle, she said. ....

Woman left in agony on city street waited for ambulance for over an hour


“It just felt like something mechanical was grabbing at my foot, and it started stinging and felt like it was ripping.”
As she fought to stay conscious she realised her foot had somehow become trapped in a sack barrow carrying plastic milk bottles.
The young man in charge of the barrow apologised for the accident but left when a passing bus driver said it was probably nothing more than a sprain.
But Madden-Hall and her son knew the injury was serious.

Maureen Madden-Hall, from Ashburton, is recovering in Christchurch Hospital with a broken leg.
Her son rang St John about 2.15pm and was told an ambulance would be sent. Madden-Hall waited in the cold with only the help of a passerby who kept her calm. ....
