Kathryn Maple Wins Prestigious John Moores Painting Prize  / Kathryn Maple has won the prestigious John Moores Painting Prize 2020 with her vibrant work, The Common. The Walker Art Gallery announced the recipients today. A large, figurative work, Kathryn describes the painting as depicting a ‘..meeting place, an intersection, people seemingly aware of each other, but minds elsewhere – all sharing an open space’. Kathryn’s work frequently returns to ideas around ‘resting places within a city’, where nature is seen and celebrated, and the observed and imagined worlds of individuals cross paths.  Top Photo: Detail The Common, 2020 by Kathryn Maple © with the artist.

Artwork embodying deeply social nature of humans wins painting prize | Lancaster And Morecambe Citizen

An artwork which “embodies the deeply social nature of humans” has won a contemporary painting prize after judging took place online due to coronavirus restrictions. The Common by Kathryn Maple was announced as the winner of the John Moores Painting Prize 2020 by the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool on Thursday. The work shows people “sharing an open space” and is based on ideas around resting places within a city. Kathryn Maple’s work was judged entirely online (Liverpool Museums/PA) Judging took place in November last year – after Liverpool was put under the highest level of coronavirus restrictions – so for the first time in the prize’s history the works were judged entirely online, with high-spec cameras, screens, speakers and software used to allow judges to appreciate their scale, texture and detail.
