Town missed out on the chance to return to the top of the Championship following a 0-0 draw at home to Watford but are back to second in the table. The Blues came closest to scoring in the first half when Nathan Broadhead hit the post and Kieffer Moore saw a header from almost point-blank saved by Hornets keeper Daniel Bachmann but were less dominant after the break.
Town’s long, long wait for East Anglian derby success continues following a 1-0 defeat to Norwich City at Carrow Road. The Blues, who went into the weekend top of the Championship but following the afternoon fixtures are down to second, were never at their best with Marcelino Nunez’s 39th-minute free-kick giving the Canaries the lead and Town huffing and puffing unconvincingly as they looked for a leveller in the second half.
Leif Davis gave the Blues the lead but Southampton but Che Adams and Adam Armstrong hit back for the Saints to give the visitors a 2-1 half-time lead at Portman Road.
Sub Jeremy Sarmiento scored a 97th-minute winner as Town came from behind to beat 10-man Southampton 3-2 in a Portman Road classic which will live long in the memory and return to the top of the Championship. Leif Davis gave the Blues the lead on 13 but Southampton hit back through Che Adams only a minute later and Adam Armstrong gave the visitors the lead in the 23rd minute. Town had been second best but took charge after a triple substitution with one of those changes Nathan Broadhead levelling on 68, before ex-Town loanee James Bree was dismissed for hauling down Davis on 85 and Sarmiento sent Portman Road into raptures seconds from the end.
Omari Hutchinson netted a dramatic winner five minutes into injury time a minute after Rotherham had levelled as Town came from behind to beat the bottom-of-the-table Millers 4-3 to climb to third in the Championship. Wes Burns scored twice and Kieffer Moore once as the Blues came from a goal down, scored by Tom Eaves in the second minutes, to give Town a 3-1 half-time lead but the South Yorkshiremen pulled one back via Hakeem Odoffin on the hour, then, with Town having been a shadow of their usual selves, Cafu netted a controversial penalty in the 94th minute before Hutchinson’s heroics a minute later won what could prove three vital points for the Blues.
