Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, UK This sturdy castle turned luxury hotel dates to the 1500s and was once owned by King Henry VIII. This is where he came with his ill-fated second wife Anne Boleyn on their honeymoon, and where his daughter from his first wife, who was to become Queen Mary I, lived for several years. Turrets, walled gardens, paneled rooms with decorated ceilings, rooms decorated with cozy wall hangings, open fireplaces, and four-poster beds: You can practically taste the history. You can even try your hand at royal pastimes such as falconry and archery. Thornbury Castle lies 12 miles out of the city of Bristol and within easy reach of the Cotswolds, should you get bored with being royalty. ....
The Best Road Trips On (Nearly) Every Continent Jan.31.2021 Since the 1960s, the humble road trip has been a popular way of traveling and exploring near and far while still being affordable. Remember the road trips from our childhoods? The car bursting full, and trying to keep busy by counting cars while stuck in the back with all the suitcases? Quite honestly, that road trip is still relevant to my travels today. Road trips are the perfect way to explore a region or a country, giving you flexibility and independence while saving money along the way. There is nothing quite like the freedom of the open road stretching to the horizon, with every sign you pass a potential adventure. No wonder ....
The 11 Most Scenic Train Rides In Europe Jan.16.2021 In todayâs world of innovative travel, train travel is enjoying a revival. And to be honest, traveling by train has always been so much more enjoyable than by plane, because on a train, the journey is just as, if not more, important than the destination. Is there anything better than sitting comfortably by a window, with an untouched book on your lap, probably drink in hand, while you enjoy spectacular vistas rolling past outside? I have always loved traveling by train, and whether you are on a luxury train or a suburban commuter link, it is the views that are important. ....
The Best Things To Do In Beautiful Zurich, Switzerland In Every Season Dec.25.2020 Zurich is Switzerlandâs largest city and a financial and tourist hub. Located on the river Limmat and the northwestern tip of the Zurich Lake with the Alps on the horizon, this city has so much to see and do that there is something special all year round, and no season is a bad season to visit. With its picturesque old town, the famous Bahnhofstrasse with its extravagant shopping, and the scenic waterfront, you can spend your time simply meandering through the streets, stopping off regularly in the many cafes and restaurants. Shopping in Zurich, and the rest of Switzerland, is a delight, but it is pricey; indeed, it is so pricey that the Swiss usually take a day trip to Germany to fill their cupboard and wardrobes. So beware of your travel budget. ....
Dec.12.2020 Social media reminded me one morning that I had been to a bunch of Indian Ocean islands several years apart yet on the same date. It made me look at why I keep returning to the Indian Ocean for some island R and R. I think it is because the islands in the Indian Ocean are remarkably diverse, and there are so many more to choose from than in any other ocean. Stretching all the way from Africa, nudging the Middle East, all the way past Asia, and then hitting Australia, this is a vast ocean that offers an island for everyone, whether you like nature, beaches, history, action-packed breaks, or wildlife. So, I picked a few of my personal favorites to highlight the wide variety found in this ocean and to offer you some inspiration for vacations to come. ....
