Welcome back to velshi & ruhle. time for today s monumental american. mary ross was the first known native american woman engineer whose work helped put people on the moon. born in 1908 in oklahoma, she was the great-great-granddaughter of chief john ross of the cherokee nation. she excelled in math and after college took a job at lockheed aircraft corporation where she worked on several important projects. it gives me the chills just hearing about her. ross was selected to be part of a top secret team to work with nasa, and her research led to the u.s. moon landing in 1969. she also helped write nasa s planetary flight handbook and contributed to planning flights to mars. after her retirement she dedicated her life to helping women and native americans succeed in s.t.e.m. fields. she died three months before her 100th birthday in 2008. if you have a monumental ....
