Sometimes there's a house so fancy, even the mild-mannered realtor in charge of it describes it as a "veritable manor." Such is the case for this wildly pricey Westmount property, whose insides are as cream-coloured as they are expensive. For $25 million, this 28-room, 7,000-square-foot home could become yours, complete with an inground pool, seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms. Nestled on a street between the Montreal International School and St. George's School, the home is near the beautiful Summit Woods and its panoramic view of Montreal. The house is currently being renovated to levels of extravagance never before seen in Westmount, with a movie theatre, home gym AND a cigar room (whatever that is). Let's take the tour.
Montreal's housing market is not what one might call "healthy" or "affordable," with home sales at their lowest level in the last 10 years, according to a report from the Quebec Professional Association of Real Estate Brokers (QPAREB) using Centris data. This is partially explained by the fact that many first-time homebuyers struggle to qualify for loans, especially in the current economic climate.
For a 6,400 square foot house with six separate bathrooms, a gym and a games room, you'd think "mansion" or "palace" might be more appropriate. But this Westmount manor is defiantly labelled a "cottage," which can only be interpreted as a winking nod to the home's exterior stylings, which are admittedly very English.
What Canada's second-tier cities lack in glamour they make for in affordability. Of Canada's three largest cities, only Montreal makes it onto a new ranking of the top 10 most affordable cities in Canada for first-time homebuyers.
