zients is in. all right. good monday morning to all of you. welcome to our viewers here in the united states and around the world, i m christine romans. officials in southern california last night identifying the gunman who killed ten people and wounded another ten at a ballroom in monterey park, that s east of downtown l.a. he is 72-year-old huu can tran. authorities say he died by suicide hours later after police stopped him at a shopping center 45 minutes away in torrance. when officers exited their patrol vehicle to contact the occupant, they heard one gunshot coming from within the van. our sheriffs s.w.a.t. team approached and cleared the van and determined the suspect sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene. l.a. sheriff robert luna says the shooter s motive is still under investigation. cnn s natasha chen is on the ground in monterey park with more. reporter: on sunday evening, on lunar new year, when this community was
update us on what took place there in torrance this afternoon, but we understand, from talking to our sources that law enforcement officers with the l.a. county sheriff s department were able to enter a white cargo van earlier this afternoon. that is believed to be connected to the monterey park mass shooting that happened last night. let me go to camilla bernal who is on the scene there for us. she was just listening into this press conference. i guess the one useful thing that was said there, and of course, throat understand that they want to, you know, reassure people in that community that things are safe, and that, i suppose is the purpose of that news conference, which is all well and good. but the useful thing that came out of that news conference is that they did announce that there s going to be a separate press briefing later on this evening here on the east coast, but later in the afternoon for you there on the west coast, it sounded as though he said 4:30 in the a
covering sort of that part of the van that we were looking straight at at the moment. so i m seeing that the law enforcement agents at the back of that bear cat and then we also saw the drone coming closer to the ground. so i m not sure if it landed or not. but i was seeing the drone and it appears that many of these law enforcement officers here are watching what was going on through video of the drone. as you guys have been mentioning, it has not looked urgent in any way over the last couple of minutes that we ve been here. it has been a slow process and a lot of the things that my colleague josh campbell mentioned, just so many law enforcement agencies working together, expanding the crime scene. we got here a while ago and they have moved us multiple times because they have tried to expand the crime scene telling us to be extremely careful because they were just not sure what was inside of that van. so, again, we saw the last vehicle that got here sort of circling around
