MEMBERS of a Flintshire club learned about the work of a former Mold pupil at their latest online meeting. The Rotary Club of Mold has suspended many activities on account of the current restrictions, but members still meet on Mondays via Zoom. The speaker on March 1 was Dr. Simon W. Jones, a former student at Mold Alun School who is now Reader in in Musculoskeletal Ageing at the Institute of Inflammation and Ageing, University of Birmingham. Describing what members learned from him, a spokesman for the club said: Dr. Jones first studied at the University of Nottingham and after a training and qualifying as a teacher, he later returned to Nottingham to study for a PhD into The Mechanism that causes loss of skeletal mass with age . ....

Ellie Kidd was selected by Children’s Commissioner for Wales Sally Holland to join her Young People’s Advisory Panel. Established five years ago, the panel is made up of children and young people aged 11 to 18 who meet regularly, though currently online due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As a member of the group, Ellie – a learner on the Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport – will give advice and feedback on national legislation and key themes, as well as holding the Commissioner to account on the delivery of work plans and policy. ....

A TEENAGER from Flintshire ran 24 miles in 24 hours in aid of a charity set up by his cousin to support people living with a rare disease. Isaac Kneen, from Pontblyddyn, took on the challenge in aid of the Leigh Network charity which brings families together and funds vital research for those who are living with mitochondrial diseases. The charity was set up by 17-year-old Isaac s cousin, Faye Wylie, in 2010. Faye, now 31, was diagnosed with a mitochondrial disease aged just 12. Mitochondrial diseases are a group of disorders that affect the mitochondria, which are tiny compartments that are present in almost every cell of the body. ....
