Covid routs health centres
MASERU-AT least 20 workers at church-run health centres in Lesotho tested positive for Covid-19 between Christmas and New Year’s Day, as the pandemic begins to wreak havoc in the country.
The clinics and hospitals are run by the Christian Health Association of Lesotho (CHAL).
The affected health centres are Scott Hospital in Morija, Tebellong Hospital in Qacha’s nek, Motsekuoa health centre in Mafeteng and Emmaus health centre also in Mafeteng.
The infections have forced the health centres to scale down operations and are now offering emergency services only in an attempt to protect both staff and clients, said CHAL acting director, Libete Selapane. ....

The South African economy and better prospects for employment are leading foreign nationals to flock to the country.
Experts yesterday said pictures and videos on social media showing Lesotho nationals crossing the perilous Mohokare River on inflatable mattresses, tubs and cows were proof that people were desperate.
Last week authorities reported that seven people had drowned in the river while trying to illegally cross to SA from Lesotho. ....

JOHANNESBURG - Lesotho police have recovered the bodies of seven people believed to have been trying to cross into South Africa through the Mohokare River.
The bodies were retrieved between just before Christmas Day and Saturday.
The river is located at the Ficksburg border in the Free State between South Africa and Lesotho.
It is understood there could be more bodies in the water.
With the festive season coming to an end, border officials are manning the various ports of entry amid expectations that some may enter the country illegally. ....
