Small lenders accounted for 4.6 per cent of the new bank accounts with more than Sh100,000 as wealthy savers preferred well-known brands in the wake of three mid-sized financiers being placed under receivership after failing to meet their obligations.
The 21 small banks classified by the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) as low-tier had 6,155 new accounts with more than Sh100,000 of the 134,425 high-quality deposits that lenders gained last year.
The CBK data shows that small banks controlled six per cent of the high-quality accounts, down from 13.2 per cent in 2017 as depositors sought safety in larger institutions. ....

St. Paul man killed in crash on Interstate 35 in northern Iowa
The crash happened around 4 a.m. Wednesday.

A 26-year-old St. Paul man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning in northern Iowa.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, Mohamud Mohamud was traveling southbound on Interstate 35 near mile marker 203 when he left the roadway, struck cable barriers and then collided with concrete bridge pillars.
The State Patrol said it is unknown what caused him to leave the roadway.
The crash happened in Worth County, which is located along the Minnesota-Iowa border, just south of Albert Lea, Minnesota.
No further information has been released. ....

About 85 per cent of the depositors of the collapsed Charterhouse Bank are set to be paid in the next 30 days.
The Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) Chief Executive Officer Mohamud Mohamud said the insured depositors who are protected by law and owed Sh500,000 and below – make up the majority.
KDIC last year revised the coverage limit to Sh500,000 from Sh100,000 after over 30 years.
This means that in the event of a bank liquidation depositors will be paid a maximum of Sh500,000 and Charterhouse depositors are the second beneficiaries of the enhanced coverage after Chase Bank. ....

The Government through the Kenya Deposit Insurance Corporation (KDIC) is seeking loan defaulters in 27 collapsed banks as it moves to recover Ksh45.5 Billion.
Individuals and businesses who have not serviced their loans in the failed banks such as Chase, Dubai and Imperial risk having their properties auctioned in the recovery process.
The Agency is seeking a management company to that effect and will use legal charge documents held by the banks as securities for the outstanding loans.
KDIC seeks to appoint a competent management company to oversee the operations of some of the borrowers of problem banks to recover the amount borrowed from the banks, KDIC stated. ....
