A Wuse Zone Six Magistrates’ Court sitting in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced a 44-year-old businessman, Mahmud Suleiman, to six months imprisonment for threatening his business partner’s life.
The Magistrate, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, however, gave Suleiman an option of N30, 000 fine.
Ibrahim handed down the sentence after Sulieman pleaded guilty to the crime and prayed for leniency.
“I plead the court to temper justice with mercy.
” I regret my action because what happened was a misunderstanding between I and the complainant,” he had told the court. ....

The
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has urged the Court of Appeal in Lagos to list Mohammed Yunusa, a judge recently discharged of bribery charges, for re-trial.
The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja had in a ruling on January 25 discharged Mr Yunusa of the bribery charges, citing a December 23, 2020 letter by the National Judicial Council (NJC) which lifted the suspension slammed on him in July 2016.
EFCC’s prosecutor, Wahab Shittu, had called 10 prosecution witnesses with only about two more to be presented, when the court struck out Mr Yunusa’s name off the charges, and ordered his alleged co-accomplice, Esther Agbo, to continue facing the trial. ....

Mohammed Yunusa, a judge who was prosecuted for over four years for taking bribe from lawyers, used an irrelevant National Judicial Council (NJC)’s clearance to secure the termination of his trial, PREMIUM TIMES has found out.
