(Credit: Damien Schumann) The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) has found tuberculosis (TB) prevention efforts in the province to be lacking with patients paying the price. “We have conducted TB surveys in health facilities, we wanted to check whether the preventions of TB is effective in different areas, so our finding in local facilities we have found that most of the facilities are very poor when it comes to TB prevention,” said Daniel Mathebula, who is the provincial trainer for TAC in Limpopo. TB is an airborne illness and adequate prevention includes having well ventilated spaces and the use of ultraviolet lights that can kill the bacteria. High risk groups such as people with uncontrolled HIV and children under five living with someone with TB are also supposed to be offered a course of medicine to prevent TB. ....

Sugary drinks manufacturers are increasing targeting rural communities, says the Healthy Living Alliance. That’s why the Healthy Living Alliance is kicking off a campaign in communities and lobbying government for a sugar tax increase. “I’m try to be cautious about what I eat but sometimes it comes down to what we have on shelves,” said 30-year-old Mapula Mathole from Khujwana Village near Tzaneen in Limpopo. South Africans living rural areas struggle to access fresh healthy food. This is both due to cost and lack of awareness about the dangers of junk food. This is why the Healthy Living Alliance (Heala) is beginning to focus its awareness campaigns in rural areas specifically in Limpopo and Eastern Cape. The group is also calling for an increase in the so-called sugar tax to discourage consumers from buying sugary drinks. ....
