detained across russia for protesting president putin s partial mobilization of reservists to reinforce his troops fighting in ukraine. also a sharp rise in the demand for flights out of moscow. prices have doubled and tripled for one way fares, direct flights to places that do not require russian visas are sold out through friday at least. joining us now with this new reporting on russia s internal military strife, katy bowe, this is fascinating what you revealed from your sources. tell us about this division inside the russian military. yeah. so over the last ten days we have seen the ukrainians exceed all expectations with the counter offensive and put the russians on the defense in the northeast and south. there hasn t been a lot that russia has been able to do to counter these ukrainian advances. and part of the reason, my sources are telling me, is that the russian military is really divided internally over what the strategy should be here to push back on ukraine, w

this is cnn breaking news. welcome to the lead. i m jake tapper. we start in the middle east with new stories of the horror, the terror that hamas inflicted on israel. some of what i am about to describe to you will assuredly be disturbing. a spokesman for the israeli prime minister said today that hamas decapitated babies and toddlers. this was part of a brutal massacre that hamas carried out over the weekend. i should note that as of now, cnn has not been able to independently verify the claims. the israeli defense forces said hamas brutally butchered, in an isis way of action, women, children, toddlers, and the elderly. this comes as some israelis are also expressing a sense of frustration that their government is not doing enough. here you can see individuals at hospitals yelling at israel s environment minister, telling her that she is responsible, she should go home. eventually, the crowd forced her to leave the building. as israel and the military continue to pou

The bottom line, russia is having mobilitization in the south but they could mobile rise in the sonorth and get troops there. and that s access to kyiv. russia lost that battle, four or five months ago, they could retry that battle again. this is what russia tried to do at the beginning of the war and they never got to kyiv. they were pushed back. could ukraine push russia back again this time with so many of the forces deployed here and here? that s the question. those troops were there at the time, they ve been since deployed to the south they have to get more troops back there, use other units in order to keep that thing safe. there is a political consideration for belarus here. it s not so easy for them to say we re all in with russia, is it? the president there is aligned with putin however the people are not aligned with the war and he could have the same internal problems and be overthrown in the country. just give us an update where things stand right now.

The wake of this partial mobilitization. how is internal decent, how might that affect the mobilization? there s obviously been this big political decision made that s in part trying to deal with some of the man power problems that russia has been facing which are significant and in theory should make some of these decisions easier for the russian military. that s clearly the intent here, but our sources are telling us that even though the u.s. has seen some small number of russian troops move back towards the east, troops that had initially fled in the first push from ukraine, u.s. officials don t anticipate that russia is even capable right now of mounting any kind of serious military operation. and it s not clear that the mobilization itself is going to have any long term kind of operational impact on the battlefield, what that s going to look like, and certainly not
