Americans without work will face increasing hurdles to make ends meet as the number of states canceling extended federal unemployment benefits continues to grow. Currently, some 3.6 million people in 22 states are projected to lose out on the $300 weekly federal bonus checks, with about 2.7 million at risk of seeing their benefits wiped out entirely. 
That extra $300 payment per week, as well as the extension of benefits until Sept. 6 and the allocation of pandemic unemployment assistance to the self-employed, had been part of the American Rescue Plan in March. Last week, Labor Department officials declared that the federal government cannot intervene to provide jobless benefits once states ....

As the list of states canceling extended federal unemployment benefits continues to grow, unemployed Americans will be saddled with a heavy financial burden this summer. Currently, some 3.6 million people in 22 states are projected to lose out on the $300 weekly federal bonus checks, with about 2.7 million at risk of seeing their benefits wiped out entirely. That extra $300 payment per week, as well as the extension of benefits until Sept. 6 and the allocation of pandemic unemployment assistance to the self-employed, had been codified under the American Rescue Plan in March.  ....

At least 21 states have now said they will end their participation in federal unemployment programs as early as June. And one more, Wisconsin, is considering joining Alaska, Indiana and Texas and other states across the US that plan to drop the $300 weekly unemployment bonus. They ll also end the extension of those benefits, which is set to expire on Labor Day under the American Rescue Plan.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin Republicans want to end the $300-per-week federal unemployment supplement, which they said Tuesday hurts businesses that are struggling to fill vacancies as customers return amid a loosening of coronavirus restrictions.
Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos and Sen. Howard Marklein, chairman of the Legislature s budget committee, called on Democratic Gov. Tony Evers to support the bill they unveiled with the support of a couple of Wisconsin business owners.
Evers, who could veto the bill, signaled his opposition. His spokeswoman Britt Cudaback said, “If Republicans are interested in putting this pandemic behind us, they’ll stop playing politics with our economic recovery” and approve Evers state budget proposal. ....
