JACKSON, Miss. (AP) University coaches and Christian ministers filled the Mississippi Capitol on Thursday, urging legislators to seize the moment and remove the Confederate battle emblem from the state flag while Americans are reckoning with difficult discussions about race and history. “It doesn’t take courage. It takes conscience,” said the Rev. Reginald M. Buckley, senior pastor of Jackson’s Cade Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Mississippi is the last state with a flag that includes the emblem that many see as racist. BLUE MOUNTAIN ⢠The sixth grade class at Blue Mountain Elementary School recently created a puzzle of the state of Mississippi after reading the book Meet My Mississippi by Tupelo native Patricia Neely-Dorsey. âThe author had found a project on Facebook that my students had done earlier in the year on another book,â said ELA teacher Beatrice Mitchell. âShe sent me a message on Messenger and said, âI would love for your students to do a project on my book.ââ Based on Neely-Dorseyâs poem by the same name, the book was created as an educational tool and fun literary tour guide of the state, with interesting facts about Mississippi throughout its pages. Governor Tate Reeves signed a bill Monday at the Two Mississippi Museums, officially adopting the new flag with the phrase, “In God We Trust” into law. The new state flag, known as the Magnolia flag, replaces the Confederate flag that was selected in 1894 by white supremacists in the state legislature a generation after the South lost the Civil War. Immediately after signing the bill, officials hosted a ceremony to raise the new Magnolia flag at the State Capitol. A crowd of about 100 people gathered in near freezing weather to witness the new flag being raised over the state capitol. “A new chapter in our history begins today.” House Speaker, Republican Philip Gunn, told the crowd gathered to witness history ....
