Nature can bring out the best in humanity. you saw that again yesterday in louisiana. as isaac makes a super slow crawl inland we are tracking its soggy path. our coverage continues live from the accuweather forecast center and meteorologist jim dickey is there. good morning, jim. good morning. we just got the 2:00 a.m. advisory on isaac, a tropical storm. showing signs of weakening. winds 50 miles per hour. and the pressure came up a tick. that s also a tine sign that s weakening there. tornado watch in effect, until 8:00 a.m., local time. any time you can spin up systems. rain continues to be the big story. you see these bands in particular. one band along the louisiana/mississippi border. this band to the west of mobile. all the way to jackson. that s where the rains, heaviest, will continue to be heavy through the next 12 to 24 hours. and the question here. the storm will crawl. eventually start to accelerate. get picked up by the upper level ....

One that is just off to the west of mobile, alabama. and one that is hugging the louisiana/mississippi border. that s where the rain is heaviest and will continue to be most through the next 6 to 12 hours. going forward. getting to the end game. isaac will continue to weaken. make a bit more in northwesterly progress in the next 24 hours here. and swing, further northward, eastward. into the midwest. ohio valley. so missouri in particular going to see rainfall, some heavy rainfall, going a long way toward denting the drought. and localized flash flooding, too much of a good thing. thank you for the report, jim. appreciate that very much. one thing i think is important to point out. how many billions of dollars have gone into the area s improved storm protection system since katrina. i was reading this, there was a $1.1 billion lake borne surge barrier. that barrier worked. it protected eastern new orleans, the low you are ninth ward. if you remember the names, the areas were decimate ....

This is what it s like in downtown new orleans right now. these are the hurricane-force wind winds. as you try to turn north. just before the storm comes ashore, a fleeting bit of good news. katrina loses strength and drops to a category 4 hurricane. but sustained winds are still howling at 145 miles per hour. essentially the same destructive fury as a tornado but on a much wider scale. the winds are just incredible here in new orleans. we can see the roof of the superdome has been shredded. the storm is unpredictable. last-minute jog shifts the eye to the east. new orleans appears it to have avoided its nightmare scenario as katrina barrels full force into the louisiana/mississippi ....
