looming in the background, china, which has been flexing its military power in the region recently. north korea, which may launch a missile test during the president s visit to the pacific region. and, of course, the war in ukraine. president biden called out vladimir putin in his remarks today, and he s set to sign off on a major aid package while in asia to help ukraine. cnn s white house correspondent jeremy diamond is in seoul following the president. so, jeremy, what else happened on biden s first day there? reporter: well, alison, in his first remarks in south korea, president hailing the u.s./south korea relationship as a linchpin of peace, prosperity. there are heightened intention with north korea as u.s. intelligence indicates that north korea could potentially test fire an intercontinental ballistic missile and or a nuclear weapon while president biden is here in south korea or while he is in the region as he goes to japan next. that has, of course, heightened
as overturning roe. because i have to tell you, victor and alison, when the justices said they were going to take up this case, they specifically said they were going to confine it to whether the constitution prohibits any kind of ban on pre-viability abortions, and viability is estimated at 23 weeks. so the court could conceivably uphold the mississippi ban, but not reverse roe. clarence thomas has seen his goal of reversal of roe slip away before. two years ago when the chief sided with the liberals to strike down a restrictive louisiana law, clarence thomas said there is not a shred of support in the constitution for roe v. wade, he wants it overturned now rather than in the next couple of years with a different case. and it s in the hands of the chief and others and those five justices on the far right at this moment, victor, alison. remarkable to hear this from justice thomas, and especially
differently now given what we anticipate seeing potentially in late june or early july from the court? we ve actually been planning for this moment, i would say. what was shocking was to see a leaked draft opinion from the supreme court but what was in that opinion was not as surprising. we heard it during the oral arguments, we heard it during the questions and our job over the last few months has been to try to impart to folks the reality that roe was very likely to be overturned and if they just focused on the mississippi ban, the 15-week ban, it would have still been the beginning of the end of the access. what changes now after we have everyone out in the streets, now that everyone is showing up as best we can, is continuing to be loud, it s continuing to make sure elected officials see this outrage and to pivot immediately into capturing that rage and letting people know that we will hold them accountable if they don t address this federally and
likely in june or early july strike down roe v. wade, it would be the most extreme decision that they could make on this case that they looked at in december, a 15 week mississippi ban. but it is looking like that is programs more possible than not. so if they go ahead and do that, what you will have is a patchwork of abortion laws left up to the states. and that is because there is no federal law saying when someone can or when they can t get an abortion. so it has been entirely up to the states and the supreme court roe v. wade protection put in place in the 1970s has been the only thing federally keeping abortion laws intact and specifically protection for someone to have an abortion up until about that 24 weeks of preg pregnancy. states are sharply divided and they definitely lean right. about half of states in america have some kind of law, whether it is a trigger law or something like in south dakota their
